One of the most beautiful and challenging golf courses in Montana - The Old Works Golf Course
Oct 08, 2024Here is one of the most beautiful and challenging golf courses in Montana - The Old Works Golf Course.
Located in the town of Anaconda, the Old Works Golf Course is a public course that is set amidst the unique Montana landscape with breathtaking views of the mountains surrounding you.
Designed by the legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, this course is a testament to his genius and design technique. This course was built on the site of a former copper smelter. The smelter was closed in the 1980s, and the land remained unused until it was turned into a golf course in the 1990s. The most visually unique feature of the course is the use of the remaining black slag – inert, harmless material left by the copper smelting process – in the bunkers.
EVERY BUNKER IS BLACK. So damn cool.
Highlight Hole
Hole #4 “Flue #5”
Hole #4- 195 Yard Par 3 – Named "Flue #5" plays slightly uphill. The backdrop makes the elevation seem like more of a factor. The green is surrounded by the beautiful black bunker to the right and the iconic clay and rock mound in the back left. Truly stunning visual with all the colors your eyes pick up while playing this hole.
Let's talk about these black bunkers. They are littered all over the course, and to be honest– it actually looks kind of fun to hit one of your shots out of here. The bunkers were designed to resemble the historic mining town that once stood on the site. The town of Anaconda was built around a large copper smelter that operated for over a century, and the soil and rocks in the area were heavily contaminated with heavy metals such as copper, iron, and zinc. This is where Jack Nicklause thought using the black slag from the old smelter would pay heritage to the area's history.
