Why You Should Consider South Utah for Your Next Golf Destination
Feb 14, 2023Southern Utah is quickly becoming one of the most sought-after golf destinations in the United States. With its stunning red rock landscapes, great weather, and world-class courses, it's easy to see why. Only an hour and a half drive from Las Vegas, the town of St. George has become a mecca for golfers. The number of golf courses in the area continues to grow year after year. Below we’ll discuss a few of the must-plays if you’re in the area:
- Sand Hollow Resort: Consistently ranked as a “Top 100 Resort Course” by Golfweek since 2011, the Championship course features 18 holes of golf, with each hole offering breathtaking views of the surrounding red rock cliffs. Some argue the back nine has some of the most jaw-dropping holes in the western United States. The resort also is home to Southern Utah’s only par 3 course.
- Black Desert Resort: This is a new and exciting 18-hole, par-72 course set to fully open in the Spring of 2023. The course features a unique desert landscape with black volcanic rock and ancient lava flows, creating a truly unique golfing experience. The course layout is designed to take advantage of the natural terrain and it offers a variety of holes that will test your accuracy, shot-making, and course management.
- Copper Rock: Another brand-new facility located in Ivins, Copper Rock is an adventurous rolling 6,901 yard layout with native sage, desert dunes, and copper mountains. The fairways are big at Copper Rock and the hole layouts are fair and fun.
- Coral Canyon Golf Course: Located in what many call “Color Country” in St George, the par 72 layout provides breathtaking views of Zion National Park’s green springtime bloom. Under new management, massive investment have been made to bring Coral back to its former glory. The course has new bunkers, new cart paths, and new irrigation.
- The Ledges: An affordable option for golfers looking to get the same Utah views for half the price. The course offers impressive red rock backdrops and expansive views of Snow Canyon State Park. The Ledges is one of the top bang for your buck courses in the area.
If you are coming from Las Vegas, there are also several fantastic courses you can play along the drive up. Right outside the Utah border lies the town of Mesquite, NV. If you’re willing to make the stop, here are the must-plays:
- Wolf Creek: The course is set against a stunning desert landscape. As their website states, “After finishing all eighteen holes, you are hard pressed to come up with just one signature hole and more often than not amazed with the picturesque beauty of the course rather than the score you shot.” Enough said.
- Conestoga: Undulating through canyons and rugged rock outcroppings, the integrity of the land is preserved at every opportunity. Conestoga, like Wolf Creek, offers breathtaking views of the Nevada desert landscape.
The area offers a wide variety of options for accommodations. From luxury resorts to budget-friendly hotels and rentals, there's something for everyone. Given the rise in golf, many vacation rental homes have surfaced in the area. Copper Rock golf course offers a number of brand-new state of the art homes for groups of all sizes.
There are also plenty of activities to do in southern Utah beyond golf. Visitors can explore the beautiful red rock landscapes on a hike or visit one of the many state parks in the area such as Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon. The Sand Hollow State Park also features a large, man-made lake, the Sand Hollow Reservoir, which is a popular spot for boating, fishing, and swimming. Visitors can rent boats or bring their own to enjoy the lake. There is also a beach area where visitors can sunbathe and swim. Let's not forget there are ATV rentals through the red sands!
